There is a LOT of GOOD, and even Good FREE software available on the web! 

One of the utility programs I use to recover corrupted hard disks is SpinRite, by Gibson Research.  This program has saved me MANY HUNDREDS OF HOURS rebuild time, and has saved data that would otherwise have been lost forever.   SpinRite is NOT FREE, but well worth their price!!
Gibson also has quite a few FREE utilities!
